Ark (Noah's) |
Genesis 6 stated the size of Noah's ark as:
Length = 300 cubits (450 feet; 135 meters); Width = 50 cubits (75 feet; 23 meters); Height = 30 cubits (45 feet; 14 meters). This
was the same length of schooner Wyoming, the largest
wooden ship built. "Gopher" wood may actually refer to the Hebrew word "kopher"
(pitched) -- meaning the wood was sealed with pitch to make it seaworthy. The work took five years (Book of Jasher 5:34). According to the Book of Jasher (6:2-3;17), God inspired selected animals to arrive at and board the ark. He also inspired wild animals to surround the ark, thus preventing people from boarding the ark once rain poured down. This act was necessary to safeguard success of Noah's mission. The ark landed on Mount Ararat. See pictures of Ark Encounter. |

Kept 10 years at Kiryat-Ye'arim before king David returned it to Jerusalem. Tradition claims Jeremiah removed it from Solomon's temple prior to conquest by king Nebuchadnezzar II. |
