Story Synopsis:
One of Stout's best Nero Wolfe stories. Wolfe is so furious that he forgets to order beer, Archie Goodwin's love is murdered on Wolfe's stoop, the home is invaded by Inspector Cramer's homicide crew and Wolfe must appear at police HQs under a warrant as a material witness. Cramer himself is taken off the case and "relieved of his command" until Wolfe engineers his reinstatement, after he personally slaps the obnoxious police inspector who temporarily replaced Cramer. Archie likewise becomes physical in this case by hitting a suspect and ejecting him from the West 35th Street office. Wolfe "drops" his client and even pretends to have a nervous breakdown as part of his calculated plan to expose the murderer. Cramer, amazingly, presents Wolfe with an orchid plant as thanks for helping him regain his job.
