Story Synopsis:
      Archie Goodwin tackles a murder case on his own until he is jailed; that, together with being arrested himself by Lt. Rowcliff, goads Nero Wolfe into solving the multiple murder case. The corpulent detective resorts to sending Saul Panzer off to Peru for information. Archie likewise is stumped and even volunteers to work under Inspector Cramer and buys Sgt. Stebbins a dinner. The intricate affair ironically begins and ends over Archie's torn paycheck.
