Zowie! Nero Wolfe breaks all rules in this thriller. He braves a winter snowstorm to travel upstate in order to entice a gardener into his employ, only to get entangled in a murder. In his quest to find a substitute orchid nurse he is escorted out of the county by an obnoxious state trooper, braves the eats of a restaurant, stays away from home and his orchid plants, willfully trespasses, has Archie Goodwin use a gun to keep the suspects from calling the cops and orders Saul Panzer to conduct an illegal search. He even wades through a creek and trudges through a snow-covered forest at night to grill unwilling suspects. What he refuses to endure is a rude young woman calling him Nero.
